Metcalfe's move: From a new platform he'll aim
at old targets
Now that state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe is the ranking Republican on the
House Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, we can only hope that any increased
visibility he gets from the post will spur candidates to take him on in
next year's election. November 25, 2009, Pittsburgh

METCALFE, AIDE WRONG TO ATTACK
“Rep. Darryl Metcalfe, his legislative aide Marlene Lott, and
now Daniel Page, apparently could benefit from a brief English lesson.
…. Ms Lott (and now Mr. Page) is quick to bring this once
adult discussion down to the level of grade-school recess name calling.”
(Forum / meeting along with dozens of CAP members and Cranberry Township
employees).
J. Victor Conrad, Cranberry Township (Cranberry
Eagle, June 18, 2008, Letters) [Editorial note:
the more you pay attention, the more it appears that Daryl Metcalfe's
answer to anyone who disagrees with him is to attack the person instead
of answering the issue that was brought up... either directly or
indirectly through his campaign and/or the usual group of supporters.
If you are paying attention, you will know who is in this group and you
will easily recognize their mode of operation -- attacking people without
providing answers.]
RESOLUTION DERAILED BY ONE LAWMAKER’S ANIT-MUSLIM REMARK &
ANTI-MUSLIM COMMENT SNUFFS RESOLUTION
“Rep, Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, said he opposed the House’s
formal recognition of this weekend’s 60th annual convention in Harrisburg
of the U.S. chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community… (Metcalfe
– “The Muslims do not recognize Jesus Christ as God and I
will be voting negative”… as said on the House floor…
The two-page resolution, sponsored by Speaker Dennis
O’Brien, a Republican from Philadelphia, noted that the convention’s
mission was to “increase faith and harmony and introduce various
humanitarian, social and religious services.”
The remarks by Mr. Metcalfe drew a rebuke from Democratic state Rep. Jewell
Williams of Philadelphia…”We should be careful in
making these remarks and we should support all people in America,
“..
A Jewish lawmaker, Democratic Rep. Babette Josephs of Philadelphia, also
protested and said she would seek to have Mr. Metcalfe’s remarks
stricken from the official record.
…Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s president, Dr Ahsan Zafar, said
his group respects Jesus as a prophet of God.”

METCALFE DEFENDS COMMENTS ABOUT MUSLIM GROUP
“HARRISBURG – State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-12th, refused
to retreat Thursday from controversial remarks he made on the House Floor.
…Metcalfe is regarded as one of the most conservative members of
the Legislature. Regardless, (Rep. Babette) Josephs said, there
is no excuse for intolerance. There
are many people who are conservative who not offend people’s religious
beliefs… it certainly disrespects these people of
peace. “

Press contributing to the story), Sunday Cranberry Eagle, Page 2 June

METCALFE STANDS ALL WRONG
“I have tried to avoiding writing about state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe,
since he is not my representative. He is
such a silly little man, obsessed as he is with his racism, xenophobia
and homophobia….
If he had not reiterated and embellished his profoundly
bigoted and guttural statement first proclaimed on the
floor of the General Assembly, I would have just continued to chuckle
at the comic relief he provides after enduring seven years of the Bush
charnel house. Sadly, Metcalfe has supported this senseless slaughter
of Pennsylvania citizens and a million others, from my read of
his comments on the war in Iraq. …
Metcalfe’s statement on the front
page of the June 20th Butler Eagle is a declaration of hate… The
Golden Rule and the Beatitudes both attributed to Jesus were profanely
trashed by Metcalfe twice in one week.
Metcalfe is one of those men who is dancingly proud of his ignorance.
…
It would appear that Metcalfe is densely unfamiliar with the Constitution,
the Declaration of Independence, and much of the New Testament of the
Christian Bible. It seems a futile task to ask him to read the
Quran, let alone the “Descent of Man.”
Bill Neel, Butler, (Cranberry Eagle, June 29, 2008,

TEACH ABOUT RELIGIONS
“I always taught about the religion(s) of the culture. Understanding
a people’s religious traditions is essential to understanding their
way of life…
After reading the intolerant remarks of state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe
and the unfortunate comments of Charles Calahan in his July 13th letter,
“Beware of Islam’s spread,” I can think of no better
argument for re-emphasizing the necessity for teaching students about
Islam and other non Western religions on our schools…
“Conversion by the sword” is a myth…"
Thomas Grant, retired with 35 years in public education,
Zelienople (Cranberry Eagle, June 30th, 2008, Letters)
METCALFE UNFIT FOR OFFICE
“I…also feel ashamed to
be represented by Metcalfe in the state legislature. Comments
elevating Christianity over other religions emanation from an elected
official are a harbinger of theocracy…It is unfortunate that Metcalfe
likely considers himself a champion of the Founders, either out
of sheer ignorance or evasion – both of which render him unfit for
office in this nation.
…Metcalfe’s citing of ecclesiastical difference is completely
embarrassing to his constituents and evidence of his abject attempt
at pandering (or something much worse.)
The government should have no opinion on religion as such
irrespective of whether the religion in question is Islam, Christianity,
or any other religion. Metcalfe’s comments clearly illustrate his
not of the same opinion and has all but declared his alliance with theocrats
of all stripes.
I would also like to comment on the June 25th letter “OK marriage
protection bill” written by Carrie Kerr. The bill to which she refers
aims to ban same-sex marriages. This amendment
is another example of the overt pandering
politicians engages in to placate the Religious Right. The measure would
do nothing but enshrine discrimination in
the PA Constitution. Any two consenting adults may enter
into the legal contract that is marriage, and government, properly understood,
has no role but to recognize the contract. It
is unfortunate that secular Republicans like myself are finding themselves
increasingly without a party, while legitimate issues like tax reform
and decreasing the size of government fall by the wayside.”

A METCALFE REFRESHER COURSE
“I was extremely shocked to hear medieval ideas
expressed in the 21st century, yes those thoughtless religious statements
from state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe to our Pennsylvania General
Assembly and the press.
…Our Founding Fathers did not want a government ruled by
someone’s interpretation of personal understandings of God, but
a government ruled by the human understandings of a productive life in
the world that God had provided for all…
…(Metcalfe’s) words have demonstrated disrespect for our most
vital and protected laws – those that serve as beacon of justice
and freedom across our land and throughout the world. From a constitutional
perspective, his words seem to confirm a lack of understanding of our
keystone legal principles and their applications to current life.
….Metcalfe’s words truly failed
to interpret Jesus Christ’s teachings and, furthermore, failed to
comprehend the basic underpinnings of our democracy –
those learned in our primary years and applied dutifully throughout our
lives.”
Rene Pico, Ph.D., Penn Township (Cranberry Eagle,

METCALFE REJECTS (HATEFUL) SUPREMACIST AWARD
“State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-12th, emphatically rejected an
award (White Christian Soldier Award) from an organization calling itself
While Christian Nation…. (the organization claims affiliation with
the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan)
…Officials throughout Butler County, including Metcalfe, last week
received a postcard reinforcing the group’s intent of to hold its
rally August 10th…. The postcard reads: “One man has stepped
up to say ‘No to taxes, and ‘No’ to illegal immigrants
and ‘No to gays, and ‘No’ to non-Christian faiths. We
are losing the war against blacks, Hispanics, Jews, Asians and Muslims”.

END TERRORISM, NOT RELIGION
“…I think we would all agree that it is terrorism that
we must stamp out, not religions we don’t happen to believe in.
Religious intolerance is just what produced
the Crusades and the Inquisition, and what is responsible for Middle East
terrorism….
In America, nobody has the right to force us to believe, or not to believe,
anything…
I also believe that hate speech is harmful
to civil relations amongst us, it is contrary to the wisdom and values
that caused the Founding Fathers to write freedom of religion into our
Constitution, and it sets a terrible example for the children.
I cannot find the words “to tell Calahan how much I wish he and
that bigot state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, believed that."
Tom Elliott, Butler (Cranberry Eagle, July 20, 2008,
Letters)
METCALFE STANCE IS MINDLESS
“…Daryl Metcalfe’s monumental ignorance.
Metcalfe has once again, on the floor of
the state House of Representatives, shown himself to be pompous, mean-spirited,
bigoted, xenophobic, far-right cultural warrior. His brash
ignorance flies against the spirit of America and the founder of our state,
William Penn….William Penn wrote, “It is far better to be
of no church than to be bitter of any”
Rick Devore, Butler (Cranberry Eagle, July 20, 2008,
Letters)
BEWARE SPREAD OF EXTREMISM
“Abhorrence of bigotry and intolerance was
a key driver of our Declaration of Independence, which acknowledges a
number of self-evident truths, including the notion that “all Men
are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain
unalienable Rights. Notice that our Declaration states “their Creator,”
not state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe’s Christian idea of a Creator”
or “Abdul’s Islamic idea of a Creator.”
"…Maybe you just can’t
reason with someone whose understanding of the Constitution and powers
of reasoning are seriously defective…
I’m not convinced that Christian jihadists are in any way morally
superior to – or even distinguishable from – Islamic jihadists.
The extremists on both sides and the hate they preach are the
real danger to our respective societies, not the religions themselves.”
Reid Joyce, Valencia (Cranberry Eagle, July 20,
2008, Letters)
CHOOSE REASON OVER FAITH
“Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism all are
equally irrational creeds that elevate faith over
reason and endorse mythical beings with supernatural powers and should
have no place in government…
When defending Metcalfe, his supporters
need to ask if it is worth casting their lot with a man who – even
if it is a hoax – has positions consistent enough with the Ku Klux
Klan that it can legitimately be considered within the realm of possibility
that he would garner the Klan’s endorsement."
Amesh A. Adalja, M.D., Penn Township (Cranberry

KEEP FOOT OUT OF MOUTH
“I disagree with Mr. Charles of Mars in Letters of Wednesday
July 16th." (James A. Charles of Mars wrote:
"In defense of Daryl Metcalfe’s right of free speech and the
expression of his religious convictions… Metcalfe
and I are rather weary of the war against Christianity waged by all
these Ph.D.s, M.D.s and the ACLU. We feel that so many of these
liberal critics want to force us back into the catacombs while they endorse
all other religions’ rights to use public facilities for their practices…”)
"Rep Daryl Metcalfe gave up the right of free speech and
any expression of his personal religious convictions when he was elected
as a State Representative. When he was elected he
was elected to SERVE THE PEOPLE of his district. That means not sticking
his foot in his mouth and embarrassing his district on a regular basis
with anti-Christian rhetoric similar to Rick Santorum.
Furthermore, the only "war against Christianity" that is being
waged is intelligent people being fed up with those who claim
to be Christian but act very un-Christian in their words and actions.
Rep Daryl Metcalfe is such a person. He has forgotten the parts
about tolerance with his Xenophobia and Homophobia. His
political machine operates upon the "G"
smoke screen. In fact, if you strip out Guns,
God, Gays (and
Immigrants and Dead People Voting), the public would soon realize that
Daryl Metcalfe has accomplished ABSOLUETLY
NOTHING in all of his time in office.
So, Mr. Charles, here's a conservative who
has heard enough of bigotry, hate mongering, and those supposed Christians
who cause Jesus to shake his head in sadness. If
you want to be a Christian, ACT AND TALK LIKE ONE."
Robert Arlia, Cranberry Twp, (Cranberry Eagle, July
23, 2008, Letters)
TIME TO VOTE OUT METCALFE
“I fully believe in diversity, but hate can never be
accurately labeled as “diversity”. Using Olen’s
logic, racial slurs, attacks against the sexuality, religion, etc., of
some of our neighbors and other forms of blatant hate should be considered
acceptable “diversity.” That is obviously ridiculous to most
people...
I, for one, am not going to lighten up, and I will do everything I can
to get Metcalfe out of office. Metcalfe represents the district
where I live, and repeatedly has brought shame to himself and to the entire
district.
I am a Christian, but Metcalfe’s brand
of Christianity bears no resemblance to religion I love and practice.
It is my hope that other Christians and non-Christians who have voted
for Metcalfe in the past will now realize that his views are extreme and
often tinged with hate.
It is time to vote Metcalfe out of the office he has so often disgraced.

VIA WIDELY DISTRIBUTED EMAIL: Sent: Tuesday, July 29,

Subject: THIS is what Daryl Metcalfe rejected on the House floor
"Hi
I urge you to look at the attached
file - it's the text of House Resolution 809, which Daryl Metcalfe
blocked last month in order to protect us against those fearful Muslims.
It was sent to me by House Speaker Dennis O'Brien, the Republican legislator
who introduced the bill. One of Daryl's complaints was that the House
didn't have adequate time to consider the resolution. After you've read
this huge (almost an entire double-spaced page) tome, you can be the judge
of what a tall order that "consideration" represents, and you
can judge for yourself whether the resolution reflects an organization
that we should fear and persecute, or understand and embrace.
Daryl actually called me at home on the
morning of July 23 to complain about my recent letters to the editor that
were critical of him, and to call me ignorant (several times).
He said that he was quoted out of context by the AP on the Muslim courtesy-resolution
issue. He said the resolution was improperly drafted, and he objected
to a reference to William Penn. Daryl's grasp of history is a little suspect,
so it's not clear that he understands that Penn's original charter limited
the right to vote and to hold political office to Protestants. Penn denied
those rights to Jews and Muslims, who, he observed, did not believe in
Christ as God, and to Catholics, who were "subservient to the Pope,"
and to enslaved Africans and African-Americans. At least this all gives
Daryl a little wiggle room, since as far as I know
he hasn't gone on a rant against Catholics yet.
The really important thing that's not clear, though, is whether Daryl
understands that we do not live in Penn's time or Penn's Colony - we
live in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, whose Constitution Daryl is
sworn to support, obey, and defend, and which clearly and absolutely prohibits
discrimination on the basis of religion. Do you suppose anyone's
interested in researching the number and content of similar courtesy resolutions
that Daryl has voted for and against over the past few years, to see if
his objection to this one reflects any kind of pattern?
Regarding the recent negative press he's been getting, I pointed
out that Daryl's dust-up over Muslims on the floor of the House isn't
viewed by most of us as an isolated event - it's just the event
that finally opened the floodgate of anti-hate and anti-fear (and by extension,
anti-Daryl) opinion that exists in this area. I told him that
most of the anti-Daryl letters I've read recently clearly viewed his alleged
anti-Muslim comments in the much larger context of his hateful
approach to anyone who's not a native-born white Christian. He
harrrumphed and quickly changed the subject. Context, it seems, is a term
that for Daryl has a very narrow definition.
Daryl also told me three times during his blustering phone call
that he was going to be sure that the District Attorney knows I've been
inviting people to John Olesnevich's anti-hate "Unity" rally
on August 10 (more about that below). He clearly implied that he would
like nothing better than to scare me into thinking I've been implicated
in what he believes is an effort to smear him through a bogus attempt
to link him to the KKK and an Erie-based white-supremacist group that
(the press reported) had given him an award a few weeks ago. Such a smear
campaign, if that's really what it is, would be despicable, and 'way to
Carl-Rovian for me or anyone I know. Besides, Daryl
doesn't need outsiders to make him look bad.
He doesn't seem to "get it" that the Unity rally envisioned
by John Olesnevich is diametrically opposed to the kind of hate-mongering
sentiments that the Erie group (whether real or imagined) represents.
Nothing would make me happier than to have the Erie-KKK hate group actually
show up for a rally at the same time and place, as advertised, and allow
us to show the local citizenry the difference
between Daryl's credo of hate and fear and our deep desire to foster unity
and get back to the freedom, courtesy, and tolerance that makes most of
this country great."

Editorial
comment: An elected official, specifically, a STATE
Representative that calls a constituent at home,
calls that constituent "ignorant" several times, and then attempts
to threaten or intimidate the constituent via the District Attorney's
office because the constituent invites people to a competitor's rally
against hate???
THAT'S JUST WRONG.....
NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN, OR WHAT PARTY YOU BELONG TO.
Now you might understand WHY
people wanted these informational web sites -- to educate the
public as to the true nature of Daryl Metcalfe and expose his "Chicken
Little Sky is Falling" rants for what they really are -- smoke screens
to hide the fact that he has promised a lot but has actually accomplished
NOTHING in regards to ANY of his promises in the past 12 years. It is
time to get rid of all incumbents who don't deliver on their promises!
